NNMSMGA member and former Los Alamos resident Bill Fox passed away on January 7, 2007 at age 75 in Albuquerque. Bill was born in Santa Fe and retired after more than 40 years from the Los Alamos National Laboratory. He is survived by his loving wife Helen.

From the Los Alamos Monitor, April 9, 2006 Gilbert Martinez , 76, a lifelong resident of Los Alamos died suddenly on April 5, 2006. An avid golfer, he passed away playing the game he loved. Gilbert was a graduate of Los Alamos High School and played on the first winning Topper football team. He served his country in the United States Army. Gilbert worked for the Los Alamos National Laboratory as a technician until his retirement. He was a long- time member of the NNMSMGA.
Jesse Manzanares got his first Hole In One Tuesday, July 12th at the Black Mesa Golf Course on Hole Number 11.
J. R. McDaniel of Espanola died Sunday April 3, 2005 after a short illness. He was a trained pilot during World War II and the Espanola Fire Chief in the 1950s. He opened, owned and operated the Tewa Lanes in Espanola for many years. He was a member of the NNMSMGA for eleven years, 1993 thru 2003.
Our long time outstanding executive director, Brooks Wilson, succumbed to cancer on October 30, 2004. He will be sorely missed. Brooks graduated from Amarillo High School and the University of Colorado at Boulder. He practiced as a Certified Public Accountant in Texas and New Mexico. In 1977 he was appointed by the Governor of Texas to The State Board of Public Accountancy, where he served for 6 years. Brooks was a United States Army Veteran, having served in World War II. Brooks is survived by his wife Ann, seven sons, one daughter and 14 grandchildren. The family has requested donations be made to the NNMSMGA Scholarship Fund.
David Malouff, a long time member from Trinidad, Colorado passed away on March 27, 2004 following surgery. Memorials may be made to the NNMSMGA Scholarship Fund, P. O. Box 40, Cimarron, NM 87714
Joan Fleetwood, wife of past President Howard Fleetwood, died on Tuesday, January 14, 2003. Services were held at 12:30 pm Friday, January 17, 2003, at St. Francis Cathedral in Santa Fe. Memorials are requested for the Museum of New Mexico Foundation, P.O. Box 2087, Santa Fe, NM 87504.
On Friday, October 4 we lost one of our nicest members. Horace Sanders of Espanola passed away. Horace Sanders, 82, died Friday, October 4. He was born Oct. 25, 1919, in Sandy Hook, Miss. to Byron and Dixie Sanders. He was educated in Bogalusa, La. and graduated in 1938. He joined the Army Air Corp in October 1939 and was stationed in Albuquerque where he met his wife, Phyllis. They were married October 2, 1943, a wonderful 59 years. He received his Glider Pilot wings in December of 1943 and left for England in March 1944. He participated in several glider landings, the first on D-day. He returned to the states in July 1945 and thanks to Los Alamos and the atom bomb, he was honorably discharged in November 1945. He worked one year in Longview, Texas then came to Las Vegas, NM to Highlands University, receiving his bachelor of arts in 1954. He secured a teaching position at Espanola High School. After six years he went to Los Alamos National Lab as a data analyst until his retirement in 1975. He belonged to the World War II National Glider Pilots Association, the American Legion, NRA, Northern New Mexico Senior Mens' Golf Association and the National Left Handers' Golf Association. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Phyllis Sanders of Espanola, two nephews, great nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held at the Valley View United Methodist Church in Espanola. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the WWII GP Museum in Lubbock, Texas or the Amigos del Valle in Espanola.
In June we lost two of our members, Ed Sandlin of Trinidad and Jim Moss of Ute Park. From the Trinidad Chronicle-News, June 5: ROY EDWARD (ED) SANDLIN, JR. Roy Edward (Ed) Sandlin, Jr. passed away peacefully on June 2, 2002. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2002 at the United Methodist Church in Trinidad at 6:00 p.m. A reception will follow at the Twin Pines Restaurant at the Trinidad Golf Course. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the local chapter of the American Cancer Society or to the Roy Edward Sandlin Memorial Scholarship Fund at International Bank of Trinidad for Building Trades at Trinidad State Junior College.
From the Los Alamos Monitor, June 6: JAMES W. MOSS James W. Moss, 74 died Monday, June 3, 2002. He was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Oct. 22, 1927 to Jewel and Warner Moss. He was a resident of Ute Park since retiring from the Mountain State Telephone Company in 1982. He was a veteran of the United States Army who served during World War II. He was an avid golfer and fisherman, and he was a member of the Elks Lodge in Los Alamos. Two brothers preceded him in death: Kenneth Ray Moss and David Glenn Moss. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Shirley Moss and six sisters: Edith and husband Joe Williams of Albuquerque, June Neal of Pleasant Ridge, Ark., Bonita and husband Hank Hankins of New Home, Ark., Sue and husband David of Woodlawn, Ark., Pat and Bill Mosley of White Hall, Ark., and Linda and husband Danny Wyles of East End Ark. and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and by those who knew and loved him. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 8 at Cimarron Methodist Church, where he was a member. Cremation has taken place.
With heavy hearts we report the passing of Secundino "Chick" Garcia. From the Albuquerque Journal North, January 15: Secundino "Chick" Garcia, 70, of Santa Fe died Saturday (January 12). A native of Wagon Mound and a veteran of the Korean War, he shared his active life with many, including the students and faculty of the New Mexico School for the Deaf, numerous friends throughout the Southwest and most importantly his loving family. Chick was a long time member of the NNMSMGA and a member of the Board Of Directors for several years. He served as Chairman of the Publicity Committee last year. He will be missed by those of us who had the pleasure to know him. The Board of Directors has dedicated the 2002 Santa Fe Country Club Tournament to Chick's memory.
Our sympathy goes out to Bennie Peña and his family From the Los Alamos Monitor: JUANITA PENA Juanita V. Peña, 72, of Los Alamos, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Los Alamos Medical Center after suffering a stroke following a brief illness. She was born June 21, 1929, in Mora, and raised in Guadalupita. At 19, she earned a master’s degree in inorganic chemistry from New Mexico Highlands University and came to work at Los Alamos National Laboratory, one of very few staff women scientists at Los Alamos at the time. She retired in 1989 after 40 years in group CMR-1, now CHM-1, doing work in emission spectroscopy. After retirement, she continued her involvement in the scientific community by speaking to high school students in rural northern New Mexico towns and encouraging careers in the sciences. She has been actively involved with many community organizations, including the Los Alamos Medical Center auxiliary, the Knights of Columbus auxiliary, the Betty Ehart Senior Center’s RSVP program, and she was a regular volunteer with the Civitan Club’s blood donation drives. An avid golfer, she helped organize and participated in many tournaments with the Los Alamos Women’s Golf Association, and with the women of the Northern New Mexico Senior Men’s Golf Association. She was preceded in death by her parents, Max R. and Maclovia Valdez, and by a brother, Max A. Valdez. She is survived by her husband, Bennie Peña; their three children, Carla Peña-Gaiser and husband Tim of San Francisco, Robert Peña and wife Deborah of Berkeley, Calif., and Melissa MacEachran and husband Ainslie of Fort Collins, Colo.; three grandchildren, Maria and Patrick Gaiser and Mateo Peña; brother, Fred Valdez and wife Eppie; sister, Louie Delgado and husband Pete; and sister-in-law,Rose Valdez. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to be made to the scholarship fund of the Northern New Mexico Senior Men’s Golf Association, Brooks Wilson, executive director (505-376-2041), or to another charitable organization.
Our sympathy goes out to Mac McCloskey and his family From the Los Alamos Monitor: Doris McCloskey Doris Pangburn McCloskey, 83, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, in Los Alamos. She and her husband "Mac" McCloskey moved to Los Alamos with their three children in 1951. She was a loving homemaker, devoted to family and friends. She worked as a nurse's assistant for Los Alamos Medical Center and for the county Probation Office during the 1950s and early '60s. She was a generous and giving person to her own family and found time to provide assistance and housing for other children in need of a family setting. She worked in her children's early scouting programs, and she was a member of the Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Los Alamos Golf Association and Easter Star. She and her husband Maurice W. "Mac" McCloskey had been married for 62 years at the time of her death. |
